The Chalet Club's recreation facilities offer members a wealth of options. Because
the Water Sports venues are so numerous, they have a page of their own.
Your
exclusive use of these
facilities creates a more relaxed enjoyment of your recreation time.
Trails to overlooks, Tennis, Platform Tennis, Swimming Pools,
Horseshoes, Shuffleboard, and recreation houses with Ping Pong and Billiard
tables are all on the property for you to enjoy.
While we do maintain
a supply of the equipment required to participate in these activities (except mountain
bikes), we encourage you to bring your own if possible.
On the Mountain Outdoor Recreation Venues
The Isothermal Effect
One important element to factor into your plans is
the unusually mild year 'round climate that we enjoy at Lake Lure. When there
is an extreme change in topography - such as there is here with the slopes of 4000 ft.
mountains abruptly dropping to the foothills elevation of 1000 ft., there is an extreme
change in the weather conditions or an isotherm. Fortunately that extreme is a moderating
effect that gives us winter temperatures 10 to 15 degrees warmer than our neighbors. As a
result Spring usually comes three weeks earlier and Fall lasts three weeks later than
other mountain communities. Did someone say Shangri -La?
Hiking
The private portal to seven miles
of spectacular wilderness hiking is just outside the Chalet's front door. The
path can lead you from the 1500 ft. elevation at the Chalet to overlooks near
the 2300 ft. summit of Pool Creek Mountain .
Mother Nature has created an
incredible backdrop for your adventure in the wilderness with mountain laurel,
rhododendron, and one of the most lush forests in the southeast.
These trails were hand dug by
four generations of the Washburn Family and are now part of the new Chimney Rock
State Park.
Tennis and Platform Tennis
Two Plexicushion tennis courts are nestled into the mountainside on
separate sites to give players the uncommon experience of playing without distraction from
another match. The cushioned hard court surface gives a truer, slow bounce and is easier
on your feet and legs. A lighted aluminum platform tennis court is adjacent to the
regulation sized courts. With its skid resistant finish, it is a great year 'round
recreation venue.
Basketball, Shuffleboard and Horseshoes
Basketball goals are on the upper tennis court and
by the upper wood shed. The shuffleboard court is on the north side of the Main Building
and the horseshoe court is below the tennis complex.
